It isn’t easy trying to find a new staff member. We have been trying to recruit a new designer for the last 6 weeks but its getting painful. We have been using a recruitment agency but they have only sent a limited number of candidates.

I want someone who is creative led, not production led, they have to be able to shout out their thoughts and sketch their ideas… even if they are rejected and ridiculed! I keep seeing talented young ‘designers’ who have been slaving away for 2-3 years producing banner ads at a large agency – I struggle with whether they are a designer or have in effect become a Flash producer.

Of course, a designer has to understand their medium (they gotta love and hate it at the same time), and technology is always changing how people are engaging with our work, that’s what makes it great for us technology-minded creatives.

Show me your sketchbook! Show me how you visualise your ideas into Photoshop or Illustrator. And only then show me the finished product – How I am meant to know what you contributed on that banking website, was it the button in the bottom right corner, or did you really design the whole page? If your work involves creating banner ads all day that was designed by an Art Director & Copywriter (and then overseen by the Creative Director) then go home and work on your own projects, make something up, enter a competition, anything other than a banner ad.
